Think & Drink – Lake Ice & The Loss of Winter

April 3 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join the Wisconsin Maritime Museum for an engaging evening of science and conversation at our Think & Drink series event on Thursday, April 3, at 6:30pm. This month’s featured speaker is Dr. John J. Magnuson, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, who will present “Lake Ice and the Loss of Winter.” The evening’s featured drink will be the CO2-ld Fashioned, a creative twist on the classic Old Fashioned.
Dr. Magnuson, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Integrative Biology and Director Emeritus of the Center for Limnology, has had a strong interest in seeing science used in solving current issues related to conservation of species, climate change, and fisheries.
His talk will explore how lake ice cover serves as a clear indicator of climate change, with Wisconsin’s inland lakes experiencing earlier ice breakup and, in some cases, failing to freeze over entirely. Without frozen lakes, winter activities like ice skating and ice fishing are at risk. Learn how lake ice loss threatens not only these pastimes but the Wisconsin identity as a whole.
Doors and bar open at 6:00pm. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase at the limited bar. The talk and livestream portion begin at 6:30pm. To access the livestream of this event, please register here: https://forms.gle/vexmrBfu1gS8cgAK6
Admission is free both in-person and virtually. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is located at 75 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc, WI. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation.
Please note: although these events incorporate a thematic drink, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcohol consumption. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol and/or drug abuse, please reach out to the national substance abuse helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.
