USS Hawkbill made five war patrols during World War II. She sank five ships for a total of 28,400 tons and damaged 12,500 tons of shipping. One of the five ships Hawkbill sank was responsible for sinking USS Lagarto and depth charging USS Cobia. Hawkbill received one Legion of Merit, one Silver Star, one Gold Star in lieu of a second Silver Star, six Bronze Medals, one Gold Star in lieu of a second Bronze Star, and fourteen Letters of Commendation and Ribbons. In April 1953, Hawkbill was transferred to the Netherlands and renamed Zeeleeuso (S 803)
